configuring text based email for pop3 and smtp

I need help on configuring mail, mutt, pine or some redhat linux supported
text based email program. I'm finding lots of stuff on using these but not
configuring.

Help.

I've installed apt and synaptic on RH9. Apt itself seems to work, but if
I run synaptic and install something like that, there's a 50% chance
that when the "installing packages" dialog appear (once rpms are
downloaded) the thing just hangs there and never exits. After that, I
can't even use apt on the command line - it just hangs as well - I have
to reboot the machine to get apt to work again.

Anyone know of a way to fix this situation - or should I just give up on
synaptic?

I've heard that if the rpm database gets fouled, you do:

rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db.*
rpm --rebuilddb

.. but this just appears to hang when I do the second command....
doh.

I am beat. I have setup a printer on the RH9 machine and it prints
fine. I want to share that printer with two Windows PCs (W2k, WXP). I
have added the printer to the smb.conf file.
[Epson870]
;	path = /var/spool/samba
	read only = No
	guest ok = Yes
	printable = Yes
	printer name = Epson870
	oplocks = No

The windows machines can see the printer, however, in the properties
they show Access denied, unable to connect. Thus, they don't print
through the Linux machine. Is there a setting I have missed? In
globals I have:
[global]
	server string = Basement Linux
	encrypt passwords = Yes
	log file = /var/log/samba/%m log
	max log size = 0
	hosts allow = 192.168.1. 127.
	printing = cups

I suggest u try a different burning software. I've used nero and
blindwrite in your case I reccomend blindwrite.
http://www.blindwrite.com/ that way your sure to burn the iso images
properly. For a boot disk you need rawrite to create the a proper boot
disk.

This is normal MS-RPC behavior.

Later releases of Samba 2.2 implement printer ACL, similar to what is
present for an NTFS filesystem. By default, you can only see the
queue, and have to grant extra permissions from a Windows 2000 or XP
box by logging into the Samba print share with root permissions.

This is part of Samba's attempt to implement automatic driver down-
load for printers. Using Microsoft Remote Procedure Call on port
135. A serious security flaw in the MS-RPC code is what the Blaster
worm(s) exploited.

You are tripping over a new feature of Samba. It is a feature, not
a bug.

Also might be an idea to use the bigger 700MB CD's to burn it on. Also
you could invest in some rewritable ones, might save money in the long
term ;-)

Always make sure you've got CRC Error checking (hardware prefereably)
turned on for your modem if applicable.

The bootdisk.img file should write onto a blank floppy...you are using
the rawrite program to write it, not just copying it across?

Re FTP, you should just be able to type the FTP address in your browser
URL address field and then download the files you want by clicking on
their icons.

So, there were apparently two problems: One was related to access and
the second to drivers conflicting...?

First step per a thread on the Samab list -

Hi,

i know how to remove access denied !

edit you smb.conf and add the line

use client driver = yes

to you printers section..

This solved the access problem for me also, but the print jobs still
weren't going thru to the printer.

For the second: Short ans - change the CUP/Linux driver to "raw".

Long ans: When I configured the printer on the Linux machine, I
naturally configured the appropriat driver, in my case, hpijs. The
Windoze client also demands a driver so you wind up with two drivers in
series...since I can't figure out how to get the Windoze2K machine to
access the Samba print share without a local driver, I hat to, in
effect, delete the Linux one.

I have not done extensive testing, but I could print from MS Word and
from NotePad just fine, so I'll assume its all OK.

Cheers, te

The problem is that you have all the disk partitioned
for WinDoZ. And by default, that what a win install wants to do.

I sounds like you want to install Linux on the free space left on
the WinDoZ partitions.
Sorry, but you can't do that.
It's not like just adding another program under WinDoZ.
You need Linux partitions. At least a swap and a / partition.
(But most suggest splitting the / up to /home, /usr, /boot, etc)

Lets look at the primary drive first (hda)
Do I understand that you have roughly 36 gigs of a 40 gig drive
used? WOW! I assume that not just the OS. WinDoZ is big and ugly,
but not nearly THAT bad.
There are programs out there (help me some one. I don't know the name)
that will let you re-partition that disk without wiping it out.
The recommendation is always backup your data just in case, but
I'm not sure how you are backing up 36 gigs.
Clean up any of the unwanted stuff first so you can get as much
space as possible.

The second drive, hdb.
Are you using that for WinDoZ also?
If not, scrap that partition and use it also.

That will give you roughly 8.5GB.
A little more space would be nice, but 8.5
is definitely do-able.

Your other option would be to scrap everything and re-partition
and install both OS's. If you can cram your valuables onto hdb,
you can scrap hda and partition and install WinDoZ on hda.
If you do that, you might want to consider making 2 WinDoZ partitions.
One big enough for the OS plus a little room to grow, and one
for your data. Leave the rest unused for your Linux partitions.
Be sure to install WinDoZ first so Linux will see it and add it to the
boot manager.

Ok, I was to blame. I had downloaded the .iso files via IE 6. When I
started to check the media itself, I found a ton of files that were no joy.
I downloaded the .iso files via FTP, and mediacheck went well. Product
installed, works just fine. Thanks all, for your replies and help.

Ok, I have fought with this same thing for days now, I finally got the
answer off LinuxQuestions.org

Here are the changes I made to the smb.conf file

#global
printcap name = /etc/printcap
load printers = yes
disable spoolss = yes
printing = cups
printcap name = lpstat
map to guest = Bad User

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
browseable = no
guest ok = yes
writable = yes
printable = yes
use client driver = yes

CUPS won't allow clients to send binary data to a print queue by default
as it regards it as a denial of service attack on the printer. CUPS
expects nice things like plain text and postscript. To get CUPS to
except the binary data from your XP clients you probably need to edit

Edit /etc/cups/mime.types

scroll to near the bottom and uncomment (remove the hash) from this line

application/octet-stream

Now edit/etc/cups/mime.convs

Scroll to near the end again and uncomment the line that looks like

application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 -

Now restart CUPS

service cups restart

and you're good to go.

Hope that helps. After I made these changes the windows machines could
access the printers, print and que up.

i have tried to use the sane-find-scanner utility, but it reports that it
can
not find the scanner. i tried to recompile the kernel to use the usbscanner
module, but i get errors during make modules.

in the 2.6 test kernel i have, there is a section on image, i really havent
looked closely at that section to see if it involves scanners or not. i am
unable to install redhat witht the scanner plugged in to the usb port.

any ideas would be appreciated at this time.

Hello ,
I tried the adding the options to grub.conf
ide=nodma
noapic
apm=off

the same occurred again : I do succeed to boot from diskette (I do not get
the former DMA errors messages, probably because now dma is enabled), but
when booting from
disk I fail,  and get an error (system disk error );
can anybody give advice?

Possibly looks like your DMA isn't working. If you can actually boot with
the floppy, try adding configuring boot options in your grub.conf. You put
the options at the end of the kernel line.

A list of some boot options can be found here:

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/install-guide/ch-booto
pts.html

The usual suspects to try are:

ide=nodma
noapic
apm=off

You can try them seperately to diagnose the problem. Could be caused by any
of these. If that doesn't work ask Rick...

You might try subscribing to the
linux-atm-general lists sourceforge net and ask if the card you use is
supported by anything they are writing there.

I have a no-particular-brand PCI DSL modem working fine under RH7.0.
The folks over there were very helpful.

Hello,
I want to format a disk *before* installing RH9 on it;

The reason is that I want to format it before installing (and not use the
format mechanism
of the RH9 installer ) is , that I want to keep space free for Windows ;
I did try to install and format using linux installer (and keep free space
for windows)
; after I done so, there was a problem : I could not
boot from disk; I suspect this is so because , originally, windows was
installed
(and  the boot sector was held by windows);
and because did not format the disk totally, I have problems.

what is the way to do this ? is there a Linux utility for formatting a disk
?

sting

Jay, Thanks for the help and let me clarify the situation somewhat. XP
tells me that I have 30.70 gig free space on C: and 3.99 gig free space on
D:. Disk Druid (the recommended partition tool on Redhat Linux 7 install
disk) shows both these disk drives as full. Since Disk Druid 'knows' that
the disks are full, it will not add more partitions. If I format D: in
Windows, will Disk Druid then recognise the empty space? Also these drives
are both formatted to NTFS file system, could this have a bearing on the
problem?

As a previous poster said, it is not whether the drives are full or not,
simply whether they are partitioned for windows or not. Under windows,
you have a C: and D: drive partitioned for windows, thus it is not
available for any other OS. Those partitions will use a windows
filesystem type (FAT32, NTFS, etc) and, like any other OS, linux wants
its own filesystem types (ext2, ext3 etc).

You can use Partition Magic to move or shrink the windows partitions you
have to make room for other partitions for linux.

Suggestion: if you have so much free space on C: then do you need D: at
all? If not then you could use windows to remove the D: partition,
leaving that entire disc free for linux.

I just updated my HP laptop to RH 9. It previously had RH 7.2 on it, and
appeared to work fine.

One issue I always had was it doesn't want to do the right thing with a
hardware cursor, but that's easily fixed.

But now I get a whole new behavior. X starts up fine, and I can start an
xterm
or two, but soon after that it starts to use all the CPU time, and on
occasion
locks the machine hard. ctrl-alt-del does nothing.

This takes varying amounts of time. It happened during the installation when
I
tried to do it graphically.

The machine is an HP Pavilion 5210. The video "card" is an ATI Savage/MX.
The
machine has 191M RAM. I let the installer install a big swap file, even
though
I thought it to be stupid.

The X version is exactly what came on the RH 9 disc's, 4.3.0-2.

hdg, but it will
group those into /dev/ataraid/d0 as well! (Arjan van de Ven <arjanv
redhat com>)".

When I compiled the open source available from Highpoint and used insmod to
test it I encountered very high (100%) CPU times and full real memory
utilization although it did not expand to the swap file. When this
happened the performance dropped way down.

What I would really like to know is how to get RedHat to recognize the
drives on this controller without the driver from Highpoint.

Can you get it replaced with an external DSL modem instead? That is probably
your best bet.

Every time that I try to set it up, it appears that Linux is looking for one
of those setups where the DSL is done through an ethernet card attached to a
separate DSL modem. But my DSL modem is an internal PCI card. How can I
work this out?
