Well, your best bet is to go into /etc/inittab
and edit inittab , change the initd value from 5 to 3.
Reboot the computer, it will start in non graphical mode.
Install your driver, edit your XF86Config that is located in
/etc/X11 directory, then at the command line, you should
type something like startx and that will start X.
Go back in , change the 5 to 3 in inittab and then reboot
again and you should be fine.
