Subject: Unable to connect to DNS Server
Atleast thats what I think the problem is. When I
try browsing the web, the status bar in mozilla keeps
displaying resolving host address. Though I am able
to ping the DNS server of my ISP (which proves that I
am online), the web browsers for some reason are not
able to receive any information from it.
I was earlier on RH 7.3 (and was happily connected
to the net), which I very recently "upgraded" to RH
8.0, i.e. I asked the installer to upgrade and not do
a
full installtion of the RH 8.0. Since the upgrade I
have not been able to connect to the internet. I
"guess" that with RedHat 8.0 came things like privoxy,
which I think werent present in RH 7.3.
Following are some of the debug stratergies that
were suggested by the list members and here are the
results.
#1. I pinged to DNS server
ping 202.54.6.35
and I could send and receive packets from it
#2. I could telenet to port 53 of my DNS server by
issuing the following command
telnet 202.54.6.35 53
#3. However the last debugging stratergy failed. I
could not use dig to trace the path to the DNS
server.
On issuing
dig +trace 202.54.6.35
the command exited out by saying that the connection
could not be established because of time out.
I then tried hacking my firewall configuration
files "/etc/ppp/firewall-standalone" (it was an hack
without much though in it). I tried commenting out
all
lines which had DENY in it. Things still didnt seem
to
work. I also restarted the iptables by issuing after
making the changes
/etc/init.d/iptables start
/etc/init.d/iptables stop
One last thing that I tried was to stop the
firewalls
altogether by issuing
/etc/init.d/iptables stop
None of these steps above helped me connect to the
net.
Could you please suggest as to what other things I
could try ?
Arvind
