I have a Win98SE/RH9 Dual boot system that I built, configured and
maintain myself. All my friends own OEM machines that they spent twice
as much on and wonder why they can't play games with their super fast
Pentium 4's. Hardly any of them know what a graphics card is, and they
call me a nerd because I do. Guess who they ask all the time for help
when their computers don't work.
Theres people that are very "computer literate" and those who aren't. A
lot of people don't want to build, conifgure or fix their computers,
they just want to play games or surf the net. Most didn't decide to use
Windows because they thought it was better than Linux, its just what
came on their Dell or Compaq, and they didn't know there was anything
else. Most games are coded for Windows as well, and not all of them work
with Wine or come coded for Linux.
The reason Windows is so popular and "easy to use" is because it comes
on every single OEM system, has largest game selection, and one official
service department(although MS tech support sucks) instead of many
seperate and independent organizations.
When I installed redhat8, all my internet, e-mail, sound, video,
network, etc configurations were done automatically. It takes hours for
me to setup Win98 after a reformat. Linux is just as easy to use as
Windows, its just that the average person doesn't know that, and doesn't
have a chance to learn because his system comes with Windows already
installed.
Maybe if Linux could get a contract with someone like Dell or Gateway,
people could start getting OEM systems with Linux. I doubt that M$ would
let that happen without a lawsuit though
