RH 8 installed MySQL for me. Both server and client packages are
installed.
rpm -q mysql mysql-server
mysql-3.23.54a-11
mysql-server-3.23.54a-11
The /var/lib/mysql directory is empty. (home directory for mysql user).
>Did RH 8 install MySQL for you or did you download and install it your
self.
>I have had the sock error before but can't remember what was the
problem.
>I think the problem maybe because the mysql user can't find our
database.
>Do a "more /etc/passwd"

>It you install MySQL from the rpm version the home directory should be
>/var/lib/mysql
>Also goto /var/lib/mysql and see if you database files are there. Also
the
>mysql.sock file should be here too.
