Re: cdrom, cdrom1 mixed up behavior

Leila, Rick,

Would Leila get better performance if hdc was the primary cd? I thought with the hard disk at hda and the primary cd on hdb the system would be sharing the same ide channel which I thought was like a one lane bridge (only one vehicle going one way can use it at a time)?

That is what I've always thought and therefore I try to put my most used cd on the master of the second ide controller. Have I been misinformed? (It wouldn't be the first time I did something thinking it was a best practice only to find out otherwise.)

Just keep in mind that the primary IDE will contain hda and hdb (master and slave respectively), the secondary IDE will contain hdc and hdd (master and slave respectively). You always want your hard drive on "hda". You want which ever drive you plan to use as your primary CD as "hdb". You can put your CD/RW as "hdc" or "hdd", depending on what you want.

Yeah, you can technically get better performance if you have as many drives as possible on their own separate ide channel, instead of using slaves, so if the system wants access to them at the same time it can get it.

Of course how far you can go with this ideal depends on how many devices you want to accomodate, and how many ide channels you have free. I have my swapfile on a different disk on its own channel w/ no slave; but I guess depending on what the devices are and how you use the system, for some people not having slaves could be performance beneficial, whilst others might not really care/notice and could prefer an extra drive attachment.
