But the thing is Rick, why does it work from Windows?
I boot into the Windows partition, do a shutdown and
it powers down the box.

One of the servers runs from Windows 2000, the other
from Windows 98 SE (the only reason I have these
partitions there is to be able to use internet update
features of firmware etc from manufacturers). But
nevertheless, they power down correctly while Linux
doesn't.

Interesting, one of them is a Dell server :) .. the
other an MSI motherboard.

One of them is an Award BIOS, the other DELL.

Wish it were as simple as that, but if I was out of
luck Windows would do the same. I will check the IDE
controller issue as that is represented with different
standby modes within the BIOS.
