Re: Login/Reboot Problems with RH 9

I shutdown and powered off my Compaq Evo running RH 9 before leaving for vacation. I powered up this morning (forgetting to turn on the Zoom K56 modem), kudzu asked about the missing modem. I turned the modem on and chose not to change the confirguration. The HP 1825 flat panel display eventually only showed some colorful lines at the top. The login screen never came up. I tried ctrl-alt-delete and the machine rebooted and the login screen came up the second time and everything appears to work OK. What would cause this behavior? I've noticed on my Toshiba 2535cds satellite laptop, when logging out, the login screen often only shows an input box (you can't see the buttons at the bottom of the screen). Given I know the approximate position of the shutdown button, I can shutdown OK. Are these problems related? Is there a problem with the login screen? I'm using the default RH 9 blue curve.

I've forgotten to turn on my USR modem in the past and just told Kudzu not to change the configuration, without any strange side effects later. Shouldn't be causing a problem. Does the Compaq do that everytime you turn it on without the modem powered up?
