apache upgrade question

Hello all, 
 
I need to upgrade my apache after upgrading from RH7.2
to RH9.   Basically I have two questions can I do it
without using rpm install manager and can I still use
the file httpd.conf.rmpnew as a template and add my
changes for php and other things to it? 
 
I would like to download Apache from their site and
then configure and build it.  Then I'd like to rename
httpd.conf.rmpnew to httpd.conf and add my additional
changes for php and other things to it.  Will that
work or I need to use rpm?
