mixer, RH 8

When I try to adjust the volume on my PC running RedHat 8.0, I get the
following message, despite the fact the soundcore module is loaded and
the CD player works:
"I was not able to open your audio device.
Please check that you have permission to open /dev/mixer and make sure
you have sound support compled into your kernel."
As I said, I can play audio CDs, but the machine won't let me change
volume on the audio output. What do I don to get full audio
capabilities on the machine using Linux.
