Well I did download the new Nvidia Driviers and all but that was actually
not the solution. Apperently the problem was that I had the ethernet cable
already plugged into my running cable modem. I unplugged the cable and
suddenly I was able to activate the Nic no problem. This may have something
to do with the dual boot nature of my system.
Thank you to everyone for thier help. I have installed the latest drivers
and this was an excellent lesson in how to troubleshoot Linux problems for
me

You need the nvnet.o driver. You need to go to nVidia's website and
download the source tarball, build and install the network driver.
It's not hard.
I have versions for kernels 2.4.20-13.9, -18.9, -19.9, -20.9 and
2.4.20-8 (the RH9 release kernel). I've only built them for the
uniprocessor Athlon system. If you want, I can post them to the
RHIL ftp site.
