Odd NIS Situation

I have a RedHat 2.1 Enterprise Linux NIS server.  I've found that if I 
try to change passwords of users in NIS while logged into my NIS server 
that severe problems start happening.  I've tried to use yppasswd and 
passwd and neither of them produces the desired results.  Does anyone 
know of any magic to make this work?
