DOS box and typing nslookup followed by the IP. Among the data returned is the name (if any can be found) belonging to the IP.

nslookup was ported to dos/win but in a current linux use "dig -x <ip-address>".


If that fails, you can use www.arin.net to find out who "owns" the block of addresses you particular IP belongs to.

There is ARIN, RIPE, and (I think) APNIC covering different geographical regions (RIPE for Europe), but they seem quite good in redirecting you to the right one if the address is not for their region.


You can then use that information to report the abuse to the abuse mailbox for the owning domain.

I used to do all these lookups by hand and then report it, but I'd suggest looking at www.spamcop.net which gives an automated web interface to doing it all for you.
