htdig configure problem

Not sure if this is the right place to post but it's a start at least.

I'm in the process of installing htdig 3.1.6 on my fbsd 4.8 server after 
several failed attempts on my rh9 server. This latter using both the source 
.gz and also from the rpm for htdig 3.1.5 though the rpm just gave me the 
.gz of the source anyhow.

Look, this is all new to me so maybe I can learn from the experience. For 
some reason running the configure script on rh9 it kept failing, saying I'd 
have to install the libstc++ package first. But when I tried doing so from 
the rpm I was told that it was already installed.

Is this symptomatic of some known bug? Is it something I might try and look 
into to help me learn? If so, how would I start?
