cable modem, dhcp and dns

I have RH9 installed and working with my cable modem, but I had to hard
code my dns ip addresses in /etc/resolv.conf  for the browser to work. 
dhcp gets the ip address and default gateway, but for whatever reason,
not the dns settings.  Any ideas why not?
