Are you going through a firewall? It may be blocking
pings as a security step.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your reply. But I am afraid this is not the case
because if I connect another Linux box to this jack, the problem
is gone. I suspect some setting in this machine needs to be changed
but don't know what.
