Thanks for your suggestion Rob

 "redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig" simply attempts all of the available
options (ddcprobe returned bogus values and S3 864 generic) and reports
Can't start X server.

XFree86 -configure
 returns Fatal Server Error Signal 11
