handcrafting the XF86Config file is not a bad idea here. You should be safe
using the 'vesa' driver, instead of one specifically for your card.
an alternative:
redhat-config-xfree86 can also be used on the command line, with settings you
specify, e.g. (this will definitely wrap, hence the \ chars)
redhat-config-xfree86 --noui --set-driver=vesa \
--set-resolution=1024x768 --set-vsync=31.5-57.0 \
--set-hsync=50-70 --set-depth=16
what does this do for you?
I have taken the values from a generic 1024X768 monitor for you - this is a
good testing setup.
try startx afterwards...
if it doesn't work, what exactly was the error message on the screen: X is
very verbose, so you may need to scroll up to see it.
