handcrafting the XF86Config file is not a bad idea here. You should be safe
using the 'vesa' driver, instead of one specifically for your card.
I am afraid this is currently beyond my skill level !!!!!
an alternative:
redhat-config-xfree86 can also be used on the command line, with settings you
specify, e.g. (this will definitely wrap, hence the \ chars)
redhat-config-xfree86 --noui --set-driver=vesa --set-resolution=1024x768
--set-vsync=31.5-57.0 --set-hsync=50-70 --set-depth=16
what does this do for you?

I have taken the values from a generic 1024X768 monitor for you - this is a
good testing setup.
try startx afterwards...

X Server from RH 7.2 works on my system just fine. So I am attempting to
replace the Xserver system on the RH 9 installation with that of RH 7.2.
I am afraid I got totally lost in the spagghetti of dependencies using RH
rpms.
Do you know of an easy way to obtain the required rpms?
I am now attempting the same thing using the xfee86 packages directly.
