| handcrafting the XF86Config file is not a bad idea here. You should be
safe
| using the 'vesa' driver, instead of one specifically for your card.
|
| I am afraid this is currently beyond my skill level !!!!!
I doubt that. It's not as hard as you think :)
| redhat-config-xfree86 --noui --set-driver=vesa --set-resolution=1024x768
| --set-vsync=31.5-57.0 --set-hsync=50-70 --set-depth=16
|
| what does this do for you?

| · ddcprobe returned bogus values

post the XF86Config file that generated. It should have used the values
specified on the command line. Let's see if they are in the file correctly.
| I have taken the values from a generic 1024X768 monitor for you - this
is a
| good testing setup.
|
| try startx afterwards...
|
| Server Error! ..See attached Error log
Should your monitor handle the H and V sync given above?
| X Server from RH 7.2 works on my system just fine. So I am attempting to
| replace the Xserver system on the RH 9 installation with that of RH 7.2.
No I'm confused what releas of Red Hat Linux are you using?
RHL-7.2 used XFree86-3.3, RHL-9 uses 4.x. There are large differences in
support between them. 3.3 is better for old cards, 4.x for newer cards.
The S3 card you mentioned is one of those that 4.x doesn't support well.
Trying to install the RHL-7.2 X subsystem on a RHL-9 box will not go
well. RHL-9 REQUIRES some newer parts of X that the old packages won't
support.
| I am now attempting the same thing using the xfee86 packages directly.
Even worse idea. Red Hat makes a lot of changes to X.
| XFree86 Version 4.3.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.3.0-2)
This isn't going to work well with you S3 card.
~From below it's a S3-864 which isn't on the XF86-4.3 supported list.

This is screwy. It's seams to detect the same card (same memory range)
many times. What ID does lspci show the card at?
| (II) LoadModule: "glx"

you don't need the GL/GLX stuff for this card.

Same goes for the dri stuff.

OK this was the driver yoiu wanted.

The server doesn't think the vesa drive works with that card.
Since it cannot find a card (device) that will use the vesa driver, it
cannot continue.
