Please Help!! I am new to linux so the fix could be quite simple! Here
goes .... System: I have a MSI KT3 Ultra motherboard with an AMD
processor and a NVIDIA GFORCE 4MX graphics card with a Samsung digital TFT screen.
I have two hard drives in my system, 1 which has windows XP and the 2nd is for
Linux. To install Linux I disconnected my primary HD and connected
my Linux HD (which ultimately will be the slave) as the primary and performed a
CD Rom install. after boot up the cd rom was detected fine, when I tried to
initialize the graphical install from the menu the screen went blank as if it
was in stand by mode, I had to reboot and select the linux text install. I went through the install process and all seemed fine, I
got the prompt for first reboot to complete installation. After I reboot I get the redhat splash plate where I can
either wait a few seconds for the operating system to boot or press
"p" to enter the boot password for more options. I pressed enter to
boot after which the system goes through all the post checking, all of which
test as OK. (no error messages!) After the post has completed and the system is about to load
the monitor goes blank again (as if in stand by mode) the only way out at this
point is to hard boot. cntrl alt I checked the red hat support site and found a couple of
possibilities but not sure which one it could be. The first possibility said that there could be a problem
with my graphics car not being able to use 600 to 800 resolution. (My graphics
card has this capability and up to 1024) The second is that Linux requires me to download updated
drivers for the NVIDIA chip set an kernel. Even if I do download the drivers I don't think I would be
able to upload them anyway because .. I can't seem to get a command line. If I select
"P" at the redhat boot prompt and then select "c" from the
next set of options I get a Grub> prompt which does not allow me to do
anything ... Any command I type I get an error 27 command not found ... I put my primary hard disk (The XP one) back and connected
my linux HD as primary slave. Tried again but still the same. I have not
created a dual boot system as I am unsure how to do this with 2 hard drives,
hence the reason I disconnected my XP hard drive to install Linux. To boot to the primary slave (my Linux HD) I have to select
it in the BIOS, in the boot menu my primary is labeled as hda0 and my linux
primary slave is labeled as hda1 If I select the primary slave (linux disk) and then select
the "e" option for editing I notice that the root hda is labeled as
(hda0,0) .... Perhaps this could be the problem, not sure ..... Sincere apologies in advance for such a long problem
description but any help would be much appreciated!! Sincerely, A Linuxer wannaby! l |
