Hi,
I downloaded 5 of the 6 ISOs from the redhat ftp site to
my windows xp
workstation (as well as a md5sum.exe to check them) and
they all checked out
fine. Then I transferred them to my RH9 system (I need to
rebuild the
kernel to do an install onto some troublesome hardware)
using the Zmodem
transfer within SecureNetTerm 5.3.4.0. All the file sizes
match, but the
checksums do not match anymore. I downloaded the 6th ISO
from a closer
mirror site directly to the RH9 system, and its md5sum
checks out fine. (I
used the zmodem transfer because ftp wasn't running on the server)
Should I be concerned about this? I am all up to date
with antivirus on
my workstation, the RH9 system was just built on Tuesday
and has no direct
connection to the outside world.
Yes, I'd be concerned. The ISOs aren't correct unless the
MD5 checksums
match up. The trick with zmodem is that it will truncate
null bytes at
the end of a file. The .iso files need the null padding (they MUST be
a multiple of 2048 bytes in length--the block size of a CD-ROM).
Your best bet is to retransfer them using FTP or burn them to CDs off
the Windows machine (with the correct MD5 checksums).
If I'm only using them for the kernel rebuild does it matter, since I wont
be burning a CD from them on the RH system? Only following the directions
at...
http://www.techonthenet.com/linux/rh9_update.htm
I didn't get any errors when I extracted the files (the mount commands at
the end of step 1)
You got lucky, then. You're probably OK, but in the future, if the MD5
checksums don't match, don't trust the .iso file.
