Need more information on your network topology. How is your desktop
connected to your local ethernet?
How is it connected to the DSL modem?
The answers to the following questions hang on that.

No. DNS is not the problem. Connectivity is the problem.

Yes. You can use redhat-config-network on the laptop to set your
ISP's DNS server as your DNS. But you still need to answer the
questions above.
