Need more information on your network topology. How is your desktop connected to your local ethernet?

How is it connected to the DSL modem?

The answers to the following questions hang on that.

The desktop computer has two ethernet cards: eth0 and eth1. The desktop computer connects directly to the DSL modem using eth0. eth1 connects to a 4-port hub. The laptop is connected to the hub. A network printer is also connected to the hub. I have no problem printing and I can connect from the laptop to the desktop (and vice versa) using ssh.

If you need more information, please let me know.
