My local network is set up as shown in:

Even the local IP numbers are the same. The desktop computer used as a router has a static IP for the public IP on the Internet.

IP forwarding is turned on yet I cannot reach the Internet from the laptop. I cannot ping the Internet gateway from the laptop. I can ping the router from the laptop (and connect via ssh).

There is a firewall.
