Title: Re: Connecting a Laptop to a Local Network to get Internet Access
Kapil,
A
normal installation of this type is very popular. I'm not sure which type
of routers you have.
If you
have a cable modem router (Like Linksys) there should be ports for the Cable
Modem either USB or Ethernet. Make sure you find out which one and let
Time Warner know this before you get the RR Cable Modem. I would
suggest Ethernet...
You
would then connect the wired devices directly to the router where the Cable
Modem is connected. These should work just fine. Make sure if you
have hard coded IP addresses on your systems you change the gateway address and
addresses to match that of the router OR make sure your network addresses for
the router are the in the same subnet as your other PCs.
NOTE:
The best way to do this is to just allow your router to give your PC's
addresses. This is called DHCP. If you have no current network at
all, all you should have to do is connect each system to the router, install the
networking pieces of XP, RH, etc and you should be ok.
The
wireless stuff however, you should not connect the wireless router to your other
router unless you know how to setup routes between different networks, OR you
know how to enable bridging on the wireless router. Again, not sure which
type of wireless router you have but if it supports bridging you can get it to
work but it will really be a hassle I think. I would just get a Wireless
Access Point device and then get your Notebooks the wireless cards.
NOTE:
I strongly recommend 802.11g stuff. It is MUCH faster than 802.11b.
802.11b is really on effective 2mbs while the spec
is up 11mbs. 802.11g is much more like the performance of
ethernet but the specs are up to 54mbs.
A
diagram of this is something like:
NOTE:
The Cable Modem should have Ethernet or (USB)
The
Cable Modem Router (Like Linksys) Should have a WAN/Modem Connector (USB or
Ethernet) the RR Modem should NOT be plugged into the same 4 ports as the other
devices.
I'm
assuming you do not have something like a CISCO Router since you indicated this
has a 4 port hub built into the router.
A WAP
is a Wireless Access Point. This can be a WAP, Wireless Router,
or Wireless Bridge

this helps,

hi ALL,
i am thinking of getting the road runner
cabe modem service ,i have an internet router with 4 ports and another
wireless router.
i have one laptop and a desktop having
red hat 8 and windows xp respectively which i want to hook to cable modem
without using wireless, then two others users have a one laptop each
and they want to hook to but need wireless access. Is it possible that i
use two ports from my internet router and they use two ports of the wireless
service.
i am thinking like one port of internet
router goes into cable modem ,and other two i use for accessing internet.the
4th one goes to the WIRELESS ACCESS POINT/router is this scenario possible or
what willbe the issues!!
thanks in advance.
regards,
kapil

incidentally, you external
IP is permanent, is it?
if not then you want
iptables -t nat -A
POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE
