The plug and play aspects of firewire aren't fully
realized in Linux yet it appears. I have had the same
issue with firewire drives when one of the systems in
my cluster reboots.

There may be a setting in the source code you can
adjust but then you will need to relink the kernel and
reboot (unless it is a soft setting in /proc)
