RE: Setting Up a Wireless Router

Yes, everything should be straight forward. If you have everything working
and you plugged the DSL Modem into the router I would suggest you turn off
the
DSL Modem and turn it back on. Many modes will not respond to subsequent
DHCP
requests. Maybe you tried that already. Just make sure the DSL modem is
plugged into the Modem port on the Router and not in one of the HUB ports.
Once the router sees the Internet it will DHCP everything the PCs need,
Addresses, Gateways, Name Servers, etc.

Good luck,
Dan

Subject: Setting Up a Wireless Router

Now that I have my lan connected to the Internet (using a 4-port hub
with my desktop as a router), I want to try setting up a wireless router
(instead of using the desktop computer as a router). I'm using RH 9 on a
desktop computer and my laptop. I bought a D-Link DI-514 wireless router
and a D-Link DWL-650 pcmcia card for the laptop. I was able to get the
router connected to the desktop computer (using DHCP and a wired
connection to the router) and to the laptop using Windows XP Home using
the wireless pcmcia card. I could not get to the Internet (the status
light would not come on - the documentation is sketchy about this
light). Also, I could not get the pcmcia card to work under Linux. When
I tried to configure the wireless card, it kept saying the 3com card was
not present. The lights would not come on under Linux (act and link).

From what I could tell from searching, the D-Link components should
work. The box for the router includes Linux and I was able to access the
router using Mozilla to configure it. The configuration seems very
straight forward yet I could not connect to the Internet via the DSL
cable modem. (Since trying this, I've reverted to using the wired hub so
I could post this.)

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Rick B.
