I was under the assumption that /etc/issue was a pretty standard file.  So
if original poster is asking which version as in which vendor vs. which
release, then go for /etc/issue.  At least here it works on Debian and
Redhat


Debian:

Redhat:
Red Hat Linux release 8.0 (Psyche)
Kernel \r on an \m
