Imaging that you are running 2.4 and you want to make
a bootdisk of 2.6.1
Try:
mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 2.6.1
This will make a bootdisk of 2.6.1, (if it's properly
installed on your system), despite of the kernel you
were running at that moment.
