Linux Enterprise 2.1 HP Storageworks DAT 40 on a HP DL380

Linux Enterprise 2.1
Compaq SCSI bus with 5300 raid controller.
tar cvf /dev/st0 /
/dev/st0: Cannot open: No such device.
Am unable to track down the problem with getting
data on to the tape.

mount: can't find /dev/st0 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

How does one verify the proper drivers have been loaded?
I thought every device on the scsi bus would have been loaded or
mounted during the install and startup.
