Re: RH-9 samba problem

I've got a strange problem with samba 3.0.1 running on RH-9.

I suspect it is not really a RH problem, but I'm not sure. No matter what I
put in my smb.conf, I can't get the windows2k machines to see the share. They
always fail at the username/password entering stage.

Questions:
1)Is there something special I need to do on the RH-9 box to allow samba
shares ? (Does it have to be exported like nfs filesystems?)

Well, we'd need to see the smb.conf file, but no, you don't need to export the shares. Are you sure the nmbd and smbd daemons are running? Did you check the /var/log/samba/* log files to see what's going on?

These next two are OT for the list...

2)Is there a samba mailing list/faq that is not WAY out of date, like the
faq shipped w/ samba on RH?

The mailing lists are all archived. The list is at (for one) http://us4.samba.org/samba/archives.html

3)Are there special considerations for a windows domain, as opposed to a workgroup?

Yes, you must have a domain controller (Samba can do it) and you must change the authentication models in smb.conf. I'd highly recommend you look at the web site (the HOWTOs and stuff are all there). If you plan to play with it a lot, get one of the Samba books (I use O'Reilly's). Even the $9.95 O'Reilly "Samba Pocket Reference" is a good resource. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - Rick Stevens, Senior Systems Engineer rstevens vitalstream com - - VitalStream, Inc. http://www.vitalstream.com - - - - Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------
