samba hell

Pardon my language, I'm a little fed up here. Here's my /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

[global]
   workgroup = Face2Interface
   guest account = marty
   encrypt passwords = yes
   smb passwd file = /etc/smbpasswd
   log file = /var/log/samba.log
   lock directory = /var/lock/samba
   share modes = yes
[tmp]
   comment = Temporary file space
   path = /tmp
   read only = no
   public = yes

My linux box is named penguin and it's pingable from my xp box and from my w98 box. However while I can access //penguin/tmp from the w98 box, I can't from the xp box.

Maybe a hint at the problem on the xp side is that I've also lost my network, apparently. IOW

When trying to map the linux share from xp the message I get is "the network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name and password." Then it goes on to say "multiple connections not allowed". I've disconnected the share from the w98 box.

IOW Face2Interface>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network> takes forever to expand, then it shows Face2interface (notice the lower case 'i') and that node won't expand at all, giving the error "Face2interface is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin... (hey that's me!) The account is not authorized to log in from this station."

Nothing is showing up on /var/log/samba.log when this happens.
