My linux box is named penguin and it's pingable from my xp box and from
my w98 box. However while I can access //penguin/tmp from the w98 box, I
can't from the xp box.
Maybe a hint at the problem on the xp side is that I've also lost my
network, apparently. IOW
When trying to map the linux share from xp the message I get is "the
network folder specified is currently mapped using a different user name
and password." Then it goes on to say "multiple connections not
allowed". I've disconnected the share from the w98 box.
If you're using XP Home, the Linux username and the Windows username
must be the same and have the same, exact password. XP Home doesn't
allow you to change your network identity on a per-share basis as XP Pro
or W98 does.
XP Home also cannot do domain logins. Typical of M$. Take out features
and charge more for it. Sheesh!
