Some NIC cards have a problem with power surges
causing them to reset. WHy this would result in a
crash is not known by me. However, the crash could
have been due to a "brown out" causing the NIC to
reset, then subsequent hot boot (without turning off
the power might fail, until the power was cycled.

Just a semi-educated guess.
