Roberto,
Does linux mediacheck show errors? I have also heard the master/slave drive setting will cause problems if not configures correctly.

Subjective matter of opinion, Andrew. In my opinion, I'd say so.
Caveat emptor, however. No RH support on FC...just the mailing lists.
I've been doing this for 30 years, however, so it takes a lot to scare
me! I can usually dig my way out. :-)

We have FC1, FC3 and FC3 boxes in production. I'm wringing out FC4p2
boxes as I write (and they seem OK for the most part). When FC4 is
released next week, I'll run tests on those also, and if they hold up,
we'll use it as well. FC, with a few minor glitches, works quite well.
Remember that FC1 WOULD have been RH10 had they not changed direction,
and RHEL4 is based on FC2. All of my personal boxes save one (a Mac
Mini) are running FC3 (including my Opteron), and that includes the
ones at the office.

We also have Centos (whitebox version of RHEL3) in production along
with FreeBSD, NetBSD, Solaris, HPUX and IRIX. As far as Unixen go,
we're pretty agnostic.

Hi,

  I am installing RH4 (32-bit x86) on a PC (compaq
presario 5284). When i boot from the first
CD(install CD): It boots fine with the messages and
shows the boot prompt:

Loading vmlinuz .....
Loading initrd.img ...
boot:

When i type linux at the boot prompt , it simply
reboots all over again to the same boot: prompt. I
tried different options with linux (noprobe,
prompt...) but to no avail.

 Thanks for any help.

Help! assistance needed ASAP,

I am looking to install RH 8.0 on an IBM x-Series 346 server. The 346
did not come out until after RH 8 was not supported so my problem is
that I need to find which are the correct drivers to use for the server,
the RAID card used is the ServeRaid 7K, P4 Xeon processor, the IBM hard
disk used is an IBM PN FRU 90P1309.

Any help for finding and using the correct drivers in order to load and
run RH 8 on this server would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

HI,

I have a question regarding memory management particularly with java. I understand that linux threads are implemented as cloned processes and each thread
has its own process and thus "ps" shows up multiple number of processess for a single JVM.

In my scenario I have multiple Weblogic instances running , say around 3 running its own JVM. So when I give ps command and grep for java , I see more than
80 java processes. my free memory shows up as some 10 MB which is a normal and system is not out of memory.

But I want to know is there any way to know when the system is really running out of memory.

any suggestions, tips and links are appreciated

Thanks,
TG

Hi everybody, I am a Linux user from 2 months, but I am really really
desperate!

In fact I have a problem with my cd-dvd drive. The problem is that if I
write a cd iso with the drive, I am not able to use that cd with Linux! I
tried to burn it with Windows and Nero, and then with Linux, but both the
cds I got don't work with Linux and are perfect with Windows!

I discovered this while I first tried to install RedHat Linux with the
cdroms I created with the images downloaded from RedHat Network. Even during
the installation only the first cd didn't give me problems, but everytime I
needed to change it in order to go on with installation, the cdreader did
always the same: while it tries to read the cd I hear sounds like
"woooooom", as it reads the cd at the maximum speed, and then I hear a big
"toc", as it stops reading, and then a message "no media in the drive"
appears.

I had the same problem while I tried to install the Mandriva LE distro with
the 3 cds I burned in Windows.

But the strange thing is that all the cds are perfectly readable with
Windows XP! So I cannot think that the drive is damaged, but there must be
something to configure in Linux, even during the installation.

But what is it?! I tried to disable DMA but nothing changes.... so now I
really do not know what to do.

I have to say that I can use anyother cd/dvd, that I haven't burnt by
myself, with Linux.

My PC is a Dell laptop Inspiron 8600c, with a NEC Cd, DVD+RW.

I really hope that somebody can finally help me.

Thank You All very much!

Roberto, Italy

Is there some reason why you must use RH 8.0? It has been
end-of-lifed for some time, and so should not be considered secure by
any stretch of the imagination. Any reason you can't install Fedora
Core 2 or 3?
