Thank you so very much, 

I am going to take your advice and continue the
research to see what I can learn.  You’re right this
has been an education.  I never knew there was so much
dependency between the kernel and the peripheral
devices. 

I guess the members of this list will continue to hear
my confused babblings for a while longer.  In the
meantime if any one knows of some good reference like
“Linux under the hood for dummies “ or something like
that please refer me to it ;-)
