How to boot into graphics from text

Uh, maybe I wasn't too clear. What I mean to say is that the system stays in
text mode clear to the login prompt, instead of starting up a window mgr
like gnome of kde. I can start a window manager manually after I log in - so
the video display is just fine.

I just can't quite figure out how to get it start up automagically...?
