x not starting

Maybe you didn't install the "X11" in your initial setup to save disk
space. Maybe?

having a hard time getting x to run on initial bootup. 
defaulting for the time being into run level 3, and having to 
run the setup utility BEFORE running startx.

the monitor is viewsonic m70 and the video is an ati radeon 
7000 se (pci with 64mb ram).

any help would be appreciated.
