OK, I thought I had tried gunzip, but apparently I hadn't. gunzip works...

This doesn't seem to work, it just spits out a ton of the following kinds of characters, and doesn't give me the tar file it has compressed or the filename I specified to uncompress it to.

Can you just do a zcat <filename>.Z > <filename> ?
