RE: samba, fc5 win98

Hello Tyche,

I think what you can do is to mount the smb on the fc server itself first and see from the log what you have there.

I mean creating a folder like /test and mounting the smb share on that folder with all the parameters. e.g mount -t smb (or cifs) //ipaddressofserver/sharename /test -o username=usernameused password=password used.

You can verify the exact syntax from the man pages.

Thank you and regards,

Mobolaji

i have an old laptop that i use as an answering machine. i am running out of hd space on it. i would like too use some filespace on my fc5 server for the
answering machines use.

i am unable to get the laptop to mount the smb share. win98 keeps telling me
the password is wrong.

even with iptables shut down and encryption off on both machines still no
mounting. i can ftp files from one to the other, but can not mount the
shares.

security does no good unless it allows one to do what one needs doing.

any help would be appreciated.

It's pretty early where i'm at so ignore typos.

I seem to recall Samba uses only eight characters
for a password (default) Maybe your password is too long

Try setting the smb.conf file, or (in x) to be a share
only (no passwords) to see if the connection works without
the security.

If yes, then try a shorter password

Are you able to access the server from other workstations?

Try shutting down selinux for the smb service.
Be sure to set your lan in selinux as a trusted device.

Keep trying

no problem with that. very fluent in typoese.

password length is 7 characters. was working fine upto fc2.

no sure how to do that. will look into it.

have no other winbased machines that have network cards. kinda hard to find
isa network card that work.

Try shutting down selinux for the smb service.

selinux has been disabled. should NOT be running at all.
Keep trying
