Ditto 2GB Tape with RH 5.2 ?

Has anyone had success with using a Ditto 2GB tape (floppy controller)
with RedHat 5.2 ?

The RH hardware compatibility list says that floppy-controller tape
drives are compatible but not supported.

Inexplicably, RH 5.2 still delivers a two year-old release of the ftape
drivers, and as such is hardly compatible with  not-so-new tape drives
such as
the Ditto 2GB.

The latest release of ftape (4.02) is alleged to fully support Ditto
2GB, but I have been unsuccessful in attempting to install it into the
5.2 kernel.
Any advice?
