Installation Prob: Many RPM script failures...

I have been trying to install RH for about 3 three weeks now with little
success.

I believe the problem is during the package installation, I get many
messages saying that particular package install failed because of an RPM
script failure.  What is that?

I plowed thru the install anyway and then did a 'verify all' and it dumped
many screens of files.

The install diskette or whatever seems to be recognizing my hardware OK.

I've got...
hda - IBM deskstar = Win 95 (sorry, i gotta)
hdb - WD something = devoted to linux
Pentium 233
CDrom - Panasonic CR-585 (i think, it's an OEM.)
video - Diamond V330

The kernel seems solid (i guess) but I can't startx.  Something about
libICE.so.6 missing/not found.  I generally don't have confidence that much
of the stuff from the CD made it to hdb with all of those error messages and
the large RPM -Va dump.

What should I do?

BTW, I'm an experienced computer guy but a UNIX newbie.  (in case it wasn't
obvious)
