That is probably because you have not defined the ~/newsrc file in your
home directory. If that is the case, the easiest way to defined it is:

1.

%>export NNTPSERVER=news.server.com		(your news server)

2.

%>tin -r -u -c					(creates the ~/newsrc
						file with all the groups 
						available in the server)
