You shouldn't need to. What do your logs say? Did you use adduser to
add the user? Did you then set the password as root with passwd?
Unless your trying to log on as root: your system is undoubtedly
configured not accept root logons from some terminals (probably only
console). You can logon as a more pedestrian user and su to root.
