CD ROM failure in 5.1

Hi, All,

This is a problem on "someone else's" machine... It's a Dell Dimension
XPS P90, with a 2x CD ROM.

The machine is up and running - only RH51, no dual boot- which was loaded
from the CD but it will not now mount the CD.

 "mount /dev/cdrom" returns: "can't find /dev/hdc in /etc/mtab or
/etc/fstab"

If I use fstool to edit the file system config, or manually edit fstab to
include hdc as an iso9660 CD-ROM, I get:
"the kernel does not recognize /dev/hdc as a block device"

"ls -l" shows /dev/cdrom is linked to /dev/hdc, but /dev/hdc has a size
of zero.

at boot time, according to dmesg:
"the kernel does not recognize /dev/cdrom as a block device"
and
"hdc: NEC CD-ROM DRIVE: 260, ATAPI cd-rom or floppy? assuming FLOPPY
drive"

I tried to look in the kernel daemon configuration tool under X, but got
an error:
"/boot/module-info-2.0.34 file is missing"

I don't know much about how RH51 was installed on this machine, so I
can't say if something might've been missed at install time. I know a
little about Slackware, but this is my first experience with RH... very
nice, btw...

Incidently, "rpm -Va" finds 64 various items that fail, 22 of which have
S and 5 error codes. These are in a variety of areas... I wonder if
something might've gotten hosed??

Thanks for any suggestions (including urls!)

Doug
