Zip & Kernel Compile woes ;-)

Hi,

I am delving into the documentation from a number of sources including
the how-tos and matt welsh's book 'running linux' in an attempt to
compile a kernel other than the default one provided on FTP installation
from sunsite. What is prompting the need for this ( perhaps I am out to
lunch) is I am trying to get Linux to recognize my Zip Zoom SCSI card so
that I can use my Zip drive under Linux.

I downloaded the kernel and module source for the same kernel I am using
Redhat-5.2 kernel 2.0.36-0.7.

I do the make config, make dep, make clean, make zImage, make modules,
make modules_install. I respond to all the appropriate prompts re SCSI
support in the make config. The zip zoom is aha152x equivalent -so I ask
for that one. No error messages come up on the compile

However after all the compiles are done, and I run the new kernel (
listed as a second stanza in my lilo.conf), it refuses to see the scsi
device.
In Windows NT, the zip zoom works fine and seems to be located at 0x140
with interrupt of 11. In conf.modules I have an entry that identifies
the scsi adaptor as aha152x with parameters of 0x140,11,7,1.

No luck. Darndest thing   ;-)

Also, if I boot newly compiled kernel from HD, it starts the normal
loading of it, interrupts itself as if what was asked for isnt really
there and  proceeds to run my default kernel anyways. When I transfer
the new kernel to a floppy , it loads much further, but still hangs on a
modprobe error of some kind.

Does anyone have a kernel 2.0.36 zImage with all of that stuff properly
configured and recognized to see  the zip zoom? Do the details mentioned
above make any sense in terms of illuminating what the problems are
either with the scsi configuration or my lame attempts at recompiling
new kernel?
