Samba Help Please (fwd)

Hello Folks:

I'm trying to set up Samba between a Windows 98 machine and my Linux box.
I bought the book "Linux Network Toolkit" and followed through
step-by-step in configuring both machines. Here is my setup:

Linux Box:

Pentium 233 MMX
128 MB RAM
Red Hat 5.1 running samba-1.9.18p7-2
DaynaPort 10baseT card (eth0)
Daynaport 10baseT card (eth1)

Windows 98 Box:

Pentium 233 MMX
128 MB RAM
DaynaPort 10baseT card

I currently have a cable modem through MediaOne in the Massachusetts area,
and have that service hooked into eth0 via DHCP. The hostname I am given
by MediaOne is dungeon.ne.mediaone.net (24.128.104.120)

I have assigned the address 192.168.1.1 to my eth1 card. I went into the
smb.conf file and told it that I only wanted 192.168.1.0/24 to be used by
samba. On my Windows 98 machine, I assigned it the IP address of
192.168.1.2. I also went under Gateway and entered the 192.168.1.1
information.

Now, from the Linux machine, I ran nmblookup -d 2 "*", like the book says,
and I get positive responses from both machines.

However, when I boot up the Windows 98 machine, I can't seem to log on to
the Linux box at all. I get the box that comes up and asks for a
username, password and Domain. I entered root for the username, my root
password for the password, and WORKGROUP for the domain name to log onto.
This is what the book said was the default group. The book also said the
root username would be installed by default in the Samba setup and as an
account on my Linux Box.

After entering that information, I get the error message, "No domain
server was available to validate you username. Some services may not be
available to you".

Sure enough, when I go into Network Neighborhood, I do not see any other
computers there. When I click on the Entire Network icon, I get a message
that the netowrk is not browsable.

It's probably something very simple that I'm overlooking. Anyone have any
ideas what I might be doing wrong? If so, please send response to me
directly, as I don;t seem to be getting mail from the list anymore.

Thanks in Advance

- Mike
