Well here's the truth: Many 2940 series cards are supported, but a few
just don't work with anything but the latest versions of the kernel
(2.0.36 pre series). It's mostly dependant on the BIOS on the card, so
two identical cards with different BIOS's may give different results.
Your best bet is to go to a working system, compile a monolithic kernel
version 2.0.36pre10 supporting the 7xxx chip and using that on your 2940uw
system.

I know it sucks, but you can't blame Red Hat- Adaptec only just recently
released programming specs for their cards which has hindered the
development greatly.
