The X app control-pannel's first icon can control the daemons that
start at boot time.  It starts tksysv the runlevel editor.

ftp.redhat.com updates contains am-utils-6.0a16-2.i386.rpm,
the automounter package.
It contains quite a bit of documentation, including
README.autofs.  I have not tried using this package, but it's there,
complete with postscript and info format documentation.
